Manchester City 4-3 Real Madrid: Guardiola's side win thrilling Champions League semi-final first leg

City seemingly Paris bound were stunned by Rodrygo's late double whammy and Karim Benzema's extra-time penalty.

Manchester City came from behind to beat Real Madrid 4-3 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. Pep Guardiola's side looked to be cruising to victory after goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden put them 3-1 up. However, Rodrygo's late double whammy and Karim Benzema's extra-time penalty turned the tie on its head.

The result leaves City with a slender advantage going into the second leg at the Bernabeu next week. However, Real Madrid will take heart from the fact that they have come from behind to win ties on numerous occasions in the past.

The match was a pulsating affair from start to finish. City took the lead through De Bruyne in the second minute, but Real Madrid leveled through Benzema just 10 minutes later. Jesus restored City's lead shortly after the half-hour mark, and Foden made it 3-1 just before the hour mark.

However, Real Madrid refused to lie down. Rodrygo pulled one back in the 90th minute, and then leveled the tie in the 91st minute. Benzema then completed the comeback in extra-time with a penalty.

The result leaves the tie finely poised heading into the second leg. City will be confident of finishing the job at the Bernabeu, but Real Madrid will be buoyed by their comeback in the first leg.
